LARCH HILLS NORDIC SOCIETY
Youth Skill Development Programs
Age as of December 31st at the start of ski season.
Youth cross-country ski programs at Larch Hills follow the standardized Skill Development Program (SDP) created by Nordiq Canada and Cross Country BC.
The Kal Tire Skill Development Program gives kids a fun, progressive way to build their skiing skills. Designed around the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) model, the program provides age-appropriate opportunities for children to learn, improve and gain confidence as they move through the first three stages of skier development.

AGES 7 – 10
Waffles Program
For kids in Jackrabbits Levels 3–4 who are ready for a little more skiing, this program adds a fun Thursday evening session to the regular Saturday Jackrabbits program. The focus is on developing skate-skiing skills through games, activities and plenty of time on snow. Limited skate equipment is available to borrow.
AGES 9 – 11
Track Attack Program
This fun, active program runs from September through the ski season, offering 50–60 sessions at South Broadview School and Larch Hills. Volunteer coaches help young skiers build skills, strength, speed and fitness through games, challenges, fun events and ski adventures—all while building teamwork and confidence. Competition is introduced in a supportive way, with skiers encouraged to take part in local and regional races as they develop their skills.
U14 – U18+
Ski Team – Competitive
The Larch Hills Junior Race Team is committed to the growth and skill development of young racers. The race team is divided into training groups based on competency and age. Training is aimed toward team participation in competition. Athletes are encouraged to race, beginning with local events and moving toward regional and provincial competitions. (120-180 sessions) This program is coached by the LHNS head coach and volunteer coaches.
U12+
Ski Team – Recreation
The Rec Group is for U14–U18 skiers who love to ski but aren’t interested in competition. Sessions include both classic and skate skiing, technique development, games, longer outings and some backcountry adventures at Larch Hills. We also enjoy summer backpacking trips, explore other ski areas during the season, and typically wrap up with a ski trip to the Rockies.
