LARCH HILLS NORDIC SOCIETY
The Bunnyrabbits (Bunnies) and Jackrabbits Ski Programs use games in the stadium and on the trails to develop “FUNdamental” skills (agility, balance, coordination) and good skiing techniques. Grouping “like-skilled” participants together the program’s objective is for kids to learn basic cross-country ski skills and instill a lifelong interest in the sport.
Bunnyrabbits
The first level is the Bunnies Program which is for children in the “Active Start” stage of athlete development (children five years of age and younger). The objective is to introduce cross country skiing and the healthy lifestyle associated with it through organized activity and active play. In addition, the program is designed to:
- Help children develop a positive self-image.
- Be fun.
- Provide children an opportunity to make ski-friends.
- Develop fundamental movement skills.
- Help children develop an awareness and appreciation of our natural environment.
This is a parent participation program: a parent/guardian must have a membership and needs to be on skis for the lesson.

Jackrabbits
Jackrabbits has four levels. Children typically start in Level 1 when they are 5 or 6 years old, after completing Bunnyrabbits the previous year; have skied with their family; or are starting out at 6 years old. Skiers progress through the levels as they meet skill requirements. An older skier (around 9 years old) who has just started cross country skiing, would be placed into a group of older beginners (as long as there is a coach for the group), or would be placed into a Level 2 or 3 group depending on their skiing and athletic ability.
The Jackrabbit Program, directed at skiers in the “FUNdamentals” stage of athlete development, is the second level of SDP.The objective is for children to learn basic cross country ski skills (both classic and skating) and to instill a lifelong interest in the sport, thereby enhancing their quality of life and health. In addition, it is designed to:
- Help children develop confidence.
- Be fun.
- Provide children an opportunity to ski and socialize with their ski-friends.
- Build overall motor skills.
- Help children develop outdoor winter safety skills.
